Know Morse Code Quickly

"=" is used for "equals".
" . " = "dit";     " - " = "dah" (3 times as long as "dit"). One dit or dah is one "buz".

There are only 6 letters with less than 3 buzs in their code (We'll call them "basic" letters): ( ..   --   .   -   .-   -. ) "I met An(n)." is a memory aid for them. In this sentence opposites are next to each other: as the 2 dit letter ("I") to the 2 dah letter ("M"), the 1 dit next to the 1 dah letter ("E" and "T"), and the dit dah letter to the dah dit letter ("A" and "N").
I MET AN =  I ( .. ) M ( - - )   E ( . ) T ( - )   A ( .- ) N ( -. )

All other letters contain 3 or 4 buzs, and can be broken into two parts (as an aid to memory) with each part being equivalent to one of those six letters.

Many government and police agencies use what is called "the phonetic alphabet" to insure against spelling errors when speaking. It is surprisingly easy to learn such an alphabet because each word begins with the letter it represents (as Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, ...Zulu).

Below is a new "phonetic alphabet" with each letter starting a word or phrase that contains basic letters (which are capitalized) whose codes add up to the code for that letter. We could use JAM as an example. Morse code for "J" is .- - - so it can be broken into .- and - - or basic letters "A" and "M". Once you remember that JAM is the word for "J", you will always know the code for "J". Also if you go through this phonetic alphabet two or three times (until you can recall all letters) then again in 2 or 3 hours, then again the next couple of days, then again in a week, and whenever you think about it, and use it regularly instead of the old "phonetic alphabet" for spoken spelling, you will never forget the Morse code.

(mi) Zero MIles Digits are all five buzs long and follow a simple pattern. Zero is 5 dahs and Five is 5 dits. For each digit above zero up through 5 the leading dits increase by one. That is: 0 = - - - - - 1 = .- - - - 2 = ..- - - 3 = ...- - 4 = ....- 5 = ..... For each digit above five up through 9 the leading dahs increase by one. That is: 6 = -.... 7 = - -... 8 = - - -.. 9 = - - - -.
